On Saturday, I volunteered with a group of St. Cloud State students at the Upper Midwest Regional Emmy Awards at the beautiful Historic State Theatre in Minneapolis, Minn. The Upper Midwest Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences works to honor exceptional work in the television industry, provide professional development and outreach, and nurture the next generation of television professionals (that's me!).
I had so much fun helping at the event that evening. I set up silent auction items, greeted nominees and helped them find their seats, helped with paperwork to ensure all award winners received the correct trophy, and actually spent some time on stage presenting the trophies to the winners! I met other college students pursuing work in the field of television and had a wonderful time bonding with my fellow SCSU classmates and UTVS team members!
I also reunited with some local industry stars who interviewed me during my year as Miss Minnesota, including Amelia Santaniello and Frank Vascellaero from WCCO News.
Someday, maybe I'll get my very own Emmy for the work I do in television...we shall see!
I was invited to speak about my experience as a sibling of someone with Autism Spectrum Disorder at the Arc United Conference on Autism in Brainerd, Minn. Friday. Big thanks to Arc United for also allowing Trevor to host a book signing.
After I was done with my presentation, I pulled Trevor up to the stage for an interview so he could talk about his book, Danny and the Whistling Engine, and so the audience could get to know him. Trevor blew me away! He answered the audience's questions as best he could, and I took over when he needed help. But he was FUNNY! At one point, one of the audience members asked him what drove him the most crazy about his sister. Trevor enthusiastically reached for the microphone saying, "Give me that! Give me that! I'm so glad you asked!" The entire room of 60-70 was in a laughing fit the whole time. They really enjoyed our goofy brother-sister dynamic. Trevor even had me choking up with laughter at times. My little brother is a star!
Thank you to Arc United for inviting us up to Brainerd for the day. For more information about Arc, visit www.thearcofminnesota.org.
